My 2024 year In Film: A Letterboxd Recap
My year in film was light in 2024. Without getting too personal, 2024 was a bit rough mentally; I was getting off medication and struggling to find full-time work, so I was not in the movie-watching mood for most of the year. However, I started to get my groove back towards the end of the year.
I only watched 19 films in 2024 compared to the 40+ I watched in 2023. Still, one of the most notable things I did was watch the Harry Potter movies for the first time. Although I did not finish all of them in 2024 ( I am currently watching Deathly Hallows pt 2 ), I am glad I waited until I was almost 30 to watch these films because I wouldn’t have been able to appreciate them as a child. Also, Snape is my favorite, but more on that later….
month to month
January
The first film I watched in 2024 was The Imitation Game (2014). This is a film I have tried to watch for years and could not get into it. I am not a fan of war movies because I don’t understand them, so getting myself to pay attention was hard. But I love Benedict Cumberbatch, so I told myself to try it one more time. I was able to watch it, and I liked it.
The second and last film I watched in January was Saltburn (2023), and even though I gave it four stars on Letterboxd, I still struggle to understand the plot. I loved the cinematography and set design, and Barry Keoghan was great, but why did I have to watch his character eat out a woman while she was on her period, and why did I have to watch him do questionable things to a grave……
February
Bottoms (2023) was the only film I watched in February. I knew I would like this movie, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The similarities between Josie and myself were scary. I wish I had social skills like Josie when I was in High School because I never had the balls to talk to my crush. I just gazed from afar and let my feelings consume me to the point of almost failing my math final—too personal?
Also, why was Marshawn Lynch so good in his role?
March
Yes, I rewatched Fast X (2023). No, I do not want to elaborate past the fact that I just really like weird, psychopathic, flamboyant villains.
April
Miller’s Girl (2024) was the only film I watched in April, and I went in thinking I was going to get Notes on a Scandal (2006) level storytelling and did not get that, but I may be one of five people who genuinely enjoyed the film and gave it 4 1/2 stars on letterboxd.
May
Had to rewatch Revenge of the Sith (2005) on Star Wars Day.
June
I did not watch any films in June because I was watching House Of The Dragon for the first time. Here is my post about it if you are interested in reading my thoughts on it as someone who has never watched Game of Thrones: I Watched House Of The Dragon, And I Have Never Watched Game Of Thrones - Here Is What I Loved About The Show
July
I watched Love Lies Bleeding 😁 I enjoyed it 😁. Roid rage is crazy, but what’s crazier is when Lou wanted to see how much Jackie could stretch. You should have seen my reaction to that scene.
August
Things started to pick up in August when I kept hearing about Bama Rush and had no freaking clue about what it was about, and then I proceeded to watch Bama Rush (2023) on Max and wish I would get that hour of my life back. It was not good.
I then watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). These films were so wholesome, fun, and cute that I was immediately hooked. I nearly fell out of my damn seat when I saw Lucius for the first time. This was also when I became attached to Snape.
Honestly, just put a morally grey character in all black and a cape, and I will become attached to them.
September
I watched Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) and It was okay. I didn’t understand it, but that may be because I hadn’t read the books. Many times throughout the movies, I felt some scenes would have made more sense if I read the books, so I think I may have to read the books.
October
I watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) while seasick during my Symphony of the Seas Halloween cruise. If you are curious to know what it’s like celebrating Halloween on a cruise ship, I wrote about it here: A Sprinkler Mishap On The Promenade - My Experience Celebrating Halloween On Symphony Of The Seas
November
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) was the only film I watched in November, and I LOVED this one. I loved how it was shot, the effects, and the cinematography- UGH, it is excellent. This film came out in 2007 and looks miles better than some movies that have come out in the past five years. That flashback to Snape’s childhood hit a little too close to home.
Not me having flashbacks to when I was bullied in school but then wiping away the tears because the camerawork in that scene was just too good.
This was also around when I finished Disclaimer* (2024), a fantastic show; I highly recommend it 10/10. (I may be biased because I am a Cate Blanchett fan, but honestly, this show put me through all the emotions). Here is my post with my thoughts on Disclaimer: The Dangers Of Thinking Your Child Can Do No Wrong | My Thoughts On Disclaimer*
December
This is the month when I watch the most films. I watched five films. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Conclave (2024), Challengers (2024), Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas (2011), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010).
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) was great. The aesthetics aged like fine wine and felt like an actual second-to-last film. It felt like everything was leading up to a big battle in The Deathly Hallows and had me hyped to finish the series even though I didn’t want it to end.
I love dramas with religion as a central point of conflict, so I thought Conclave (2024) was fantastic. I wrote about how it hits differently if you have visited the Sistine Chapel and how there may be some connections between Michelanglo’s The Last Judgement Fresco and Thomas Cardinal Lawrence: This Film Hits Different If You Have Visited The Sistine Chapel | My Thoughts On Conclave
I loved Call Me By Your Name (2017) and was excited to watch another film directed by Luca Guadagino, but Challengers (2024) left me disappointed, and I wrote about how this may be due to me not being the target demographic for the film: I Don’t Think I Am The Target Demographic For This Film | My Thoughts On Challengers
Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas (2011) is a top 3 chirstimas movie this is not up for debate.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) was fun. This film reminded me of how I felt when I left the theater after watching The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 in 2014. There was a lot of filler, but it most definitely leads up to a huge emotional battle in the final film.
But can we talk about how Voldemort had my man Lucius so stressed that he didn’t even have a chance to get a fresh blowout before the meeting at the start of the film, and can we also talk about how Snape had a FRIEND at Hogwarts, and Voldemort kills her in front of Snape AND THEN DOBBY FREAKING DIES IN THE MOST HEARTBREAKING WAY.
This next movie will emotionally wreck me for at least 7-10 business days. I already know it.
